Nutrition Guide
Discover the best diet plans and nutritional advice to keep your pets healthy and energetic.
Fundamentals of Pet Nutrition
Every pet needs a proper balance of proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. The exact ratios depend on species, breed, age, and health status. Consult your veterinarian for personalized recommendations.
Puppies/kittens, adults, and senior pets all have different nutritional requirements. Growth formulas contain more protein and calories, while senior diets often include joint support nutrients and fewer calories.
Choosing the Right Food
Dry food helps maintain dental health and is more economical, while wet food provides hydration and is often more palatable. Many experts recommend a combination of both for optimal nutrition.
Pets with health conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, or allergies may require prescription diets. Never change your pet's therapeutic food without veterinary guidance.
Healthy Feeding Practices
Follow feeding guidelines based on your pet's ideal weight, not current weight if overweight. Measure meals carefully to prevent obesity, which can lead to numerous health problems.
Most adult dogs do well with two meals per day, while cats often prefer multiple small meals. Puppies and kittens typically need three to four feedings daily.
Treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet's daily calories. Choose healthy options like small pieces of cooked chicken or commercial treats with nutritional benefits.
Special Considerations
Always provide fresh, clean water. Cats especially often don't drink enough, so consider water fountains or adding water to their food.
Some human foods are toxic to pets (chocolate, grapes, onions, etc.). When sharing people food, stick to safe options like plain cooked meats or certain vegetables in small quantities.
When changing diets, mix increasing amounts of new food with decreasing amounts of old food over 7-10 days to prevent digestive upset.
